Ok, sorry for the click-baitey headline, but I DID get a new car this weekend, and I didn’t pay for it before I left the dealership.
I bought a new (used) Ford Flex over the weekend. I arranged financing through my credit union, which is closed on Saturday and Sunday. After striking a deal with the dealership, they let me leave in the car, with paper tags and all with only a photocopy of my license, my down payment (in cash) and my word that the bank would FedEx them a check on Monday. Of course I had to fill out all of the usual paperwork, but honestly, with a decent fake ID and a “business card” for an out of town bank, I could have just as easily walked out of the dealership with a new car for the cost of a down payment. I guess it’s not really all that different from taking a test drive, where all they do is copy your license, but the whole thing just struck me as bizarre. Anyways, here’s a pic of my wife’s new ride for your time.
Oh, and a great big thanks to my fellow Opponauts who reccomended the Flex. It wasn’t even on our radar, but we fell in love as soon as we test drove one.

Loved our old Flex. Few family vehicles are so practical and comfortable while still being cool. This is one of them.

Fact is grand theft auto is such a big crime that dealerships can be reasonably confident that it won’t happen, even if they don’t do a ton to prevent it as far as test drives go.
Honestly, I’ve even looked at a decent number of cars on Craigslist where the owner’s let me just go out on a test drive on my own, with the only real security deposit being the car I showed up in being left on the street. Maybe I come off as a trustworthy guy but I’m still surprised how many times I’ve been free to go off on a 20 minute drive in a vehicle still in their name 10 minutes after meeting them and talking about the car for a bit.

Congratulations. I couldn’t get my wife anywhere near a Flex. Even now, she looks with disdain on my Outback loaner despite it being a better car than her Explorer. She even hated my WRX until she was forced to drive it. Go figure. She hates wagons (despite driving a glorified wagon which someone calls an SUV).

I keep trying to get my wife to like the Flex too. But her mind is set on getting an Explorer whenever we decide to sell her current car

Rent one for a week before you buy it. We tried two different minivans by taking them on two separate vacations. She found both to be comfortable and functional, but she couldn’t get over the mom-in-a-minivan stigma. So, she bought an Explorer instead.
She still regrets buying the Explorer.

Good deal. We loved the way the Flex drove, and ingress and egress are sublime. The hip point is just that perfect.
Like I said in the post where you asked, had it not been for our need to use the back seat daily, and the aisle of a minivan being that much better for that, the Flex would have been in our driveway.
Also, for anyone who can’t get their wives near one, have them drive it down the road, they’ll be sold in the first mile.

Congrats! I wanted to get one of these for the family truckster, but my wife would have none of it.

Jelly. I’d love to replace our family hauler with a Flex.

Yep, my wife was dead set on a CX-9, but indulged me in looking at the Flex. It just so happened the Mazda dealership right down the road from us had a Flex and a whole mess of CX-9s, so we dropped by to drive both. Before we had made it a mile in the Flex, she was sold.

Congrats! The wife and I love hers - a 3.5 EcoBoost. Talk about a flying brick!

Also, if you feel the need for customization, might I suggest some fender emblems?

Thought it looked odd when it came out, but now I really like the looks. Mileage? V6?

Congrats! We’ve had our ‘14 for over 2 years and still love it just as much as the day we bought it.
I still perk up and shout “FORDFLEX!” whenever we see another one lol.

Yep, but not the Ecoboost, they were just too much of a premium. It’s an ‘09, one owner car with 69k.
